The Rueda Designation of Origin was recognised in 1980, being the first Designation of Origin to be recognised in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, after various years working for the recognition and protection of its indigenous variety: Verdejo.

The Rueda D.O. is located in an internationally recognised and specialist area for the production of white wines. Since 2008, red and rose wines are also included under the Rueda Designation of Origin.
