The Cigales Designation of Origin began to operate in 1991. The region of Cigales which the D.O. protects extends along the northern sector of the Duero Depression, on both Banks of the River Pisuerga. The vineyards are found at an average height of 750 metres and ranges from part of the municipality of Valladolid through to Dueñas in Palencia.
The authorised red varieties are Tinta del País, Garnacha tinta and Garnacha gris. Of the whites, Verdejo and Albillo.
